Here stands the Squires Bridge, a critical artery linking Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville. It connects these communities with those to the north. This bridge isn’t just concrete and steel. It’s a vital part of the Route 28/McGrath Highway corridor.
Each day, Squires Bridge supports approximately 40,000 vehicles. That’s about the same volume as the Sumner Tunnel in Boston. The Squires Bridge also crosses over important transportation lines. These include the Union Branch of the Green Line and the Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line. It also spans the Somerville Avenue Extension.
In September, MassDOT began work on the Squires Bridge. This Squires Bridge project was expected to last 42 days. But MassDOT modified the schedule. They reduced the construction period to just 25 days. Crews focused on critical beam end repairs. They also took preventive actions. This ensured the Squires Bridge could remain open and safe.
During the Squires Bridge project, there were some service changes. Transit service on the Union Branch terminated at Lechmere Station. This was because the work had to be performed within the Green Line right of way. However, motor vehicle travel across the Squires Bridge was not affected. Neither was Commuter Rail service on the Fitchburg Line. Green Line service to Medford/Tufts continued as usual.
The Squires Bridge work was completed ahead of schedule. Green Line train service on the Union Square Branch resumed. MBTA ran a test train before resuming service.
The MBTA estimates about 1,550 customers board the Green Line at Union Square each weekday. There are fewer riders on weekends.
After the Squires Bridge project, the MBTA removed all Green Line speed restrictions on both the Union Station branch and the Medford/Tufts Station branch. Green Line trains now travel at regular speeds on both branches.
