“Be yourself because everyone else is taken”. That quote perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Édouard Lalo and the essence of this square. Square Édouard Lalo is dedicated to a man who dared to defy expectations and pursue his musical passions.

Édouard Lalo was born right here in Lille on January 27 1823. Imagine a young Édouard, filled with musical aspirations. His family had Spanish roots and a military background. At first his parents encouraged his musical studies. He took violin and cello lessons at the Lille Conservatoire.

However his father sternly opposed his decision to become a professional musician. Can you imagine the courage it took for a 16-year-old Lalo to run away from home? He left without money or contacts. He headed straight for Paris.

In Paris Lalo briefly studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He took private composition lessons. To make a living he worked as a violinist and teacher.

Lalo became a founding member of the Armingaud Quartet. This was instrumental in reviving interest in chamber music in France during the 1850s. He helped introduce the music of Haydn Mozart Beethoven Mendelssohn and Schumann to French audiences.

In 1865 Lalo married Julie Besnier de Maligny a contralto from Brittany. She inspired him to compose vocal works and operas. Le Roi d’Ys is his most notable opera.

His musical style stood apart. It was robust and forceful. Some critics even accused him of imitating Wagner. However his unique voice shone through.

Lalo’s most popular work is his Symphonie espagnole. This violin concerto in five movements uses Spanish idioms. It remains a favorite among violinists. People often refer to it simply as “The Lalo”.

Lalo valued originality above all else. He famously said he didn’t belong to any school. He didn’t want to become part of any system. He followed his own path.

Despite facing numerous disappointments Lalo persevered. His opera Le Roi d’Ys wasn’t staged until he was 65 years old. Eight years earlier he had become a member of the Legion of Honour.

Édouard Lalo died in Paris in 1892. He was interred at the Père Lachaise Cemetery. His son Pierre became a music critic. He carried on his father’s legacy.

As you stand here in Square Édouard Lalo remember the spirit of this remarkable composer. He followed his own path with determination and passion. Let his story inspire you to be yourself because everyone else is taken.
