Is it possible to create an inclusive space for all? Here at Square de l’Argillière in Lille the answer is a resounding yes. This square located on Rue d’Isly in the Vauban-Esquermes district is a beloved spot for locals.

Square de l’Argillière is known for its play area that caters to both young and old. You can even play pétanque here. But the square’s most remarkable feature is its inclusive playground.

This special area came about thanks to the initiative of four residents. Dominique Bataille, Maryvonne Savary, Joël Nis and Benoit Flipo envisioned a space where all children could play together. In 2021 their vision became reality.

Creating this inclusive play area required some work. Access to Square de l’Argillière was improved. The boulodrome was moved. A roundabout adapted for children with disabilities was installed. These additions complement the existing play equipment in Square de l’Argillière.

The inclusive design offers a significant advantage. Children with reduced mobility can now play alongside their peers. The roundabout has space for a wheelchair. Benoit Flipo emphasized the importance of inclusion. He said they did not want able-bodied children playing separately from children with disabilities.

The idea for this inclusive space came to Benoit Flipo after a trip to India. As a neighborhood councilor he presented the concept. Three other council members Dominique Bataille Maryvonne Savary and Joël Nis embraced the idea. Together they divided the tasks. They handled meetings technical files and meetings with associations. Their passion drove the project forward. They proposed it to the participatory budget in 2020.

Square de l’Argillière offers several amenities. It features a play area a water point. Certain rules apply to maintain the park’s integrity. Dogs are not allowed even on leashes. Active mobility devices like bicycles and scooters are prohibited. Motor vehicles are restricted except for service vehicles.
