Craving some outdoor fun? Spy Pond Field is calling your name. This isn’t just any field. It is a hub of recreational activity in Arlington.
Spy Pond Field is located on Pond Lane. It sits opposite the Arlington Boys and Girls Club. This location makes it easily accessible. It is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
The recreational facilities at Spy Pond Field are diverse. There are tennis courts. They were renovated in 2015. A baseball diamond is here too. The Arlington High School varsity baseball team uses it. An open multi-purpose field is perfect for high school and youth soccer.
But there is more to Spy Pond Field. The Play Fair Arch stands here. Bleachers offer seating for spectators. A field house completes the scene. These structures were originally built in 1910. They add a touch of history to the area. They are in need of repair.
In 2019, a study reviewed the use and needs of Spy Pond Field. The study looked at the recreational facilities and structures. It considered ADA compliance. Improvements are needed to meet current standards.
Spy Pond itself is a major attraction. At 100 acres, it is the largest body of water entirely within Arlington. Spy Pond is near the Town Center. Route 2 and the Alewife Brook Reservation are close by. This makes it a central and convenient location.
Spy Pond is a “Great Pond.” This means it is a naturally occurring body of water. It is greater than 10 acres in size. The pond formed from a block of ice. The ice broke away from a glacier. It left a “kettle hole” filled with glacial waters. Today, precipitation and runoff fill Spy Pond. Stormwater drainage from the surrounding residential areas contributes. No river or brook feeds it.
The Envision Arlington Spy Pond Committee is actively involved. They focus on stewardship and planning for pond improvements. This includes water quality monitoring and weed control treatments.
Spy Pond is a precious community resource. Access is limited. Much of the shoreline is private residential property. Walking, boating, bird watching, fishing, and ice skating are popular. Swimming is not allowed. The water quality does not meet state standards. No lifeguard services are provided. A high school crew team uses the pond for practice.
In 2016, a study identified shoreline preservation alternatives. It looked at options to mitigate erosion. This focused on Town-owned shoreline along Spy Pond. Spy Pond Park, Scannell Field, Arlington Boys and Girls Club, and Spring Valley Street were included. The Conservation Commission received funds in 2021. They repaved the North Beach boat ramp with porous pavement.
Spy Pond Park includes a playground. There is a public boat ramp. A rain garden adds beauty. A walking path invites exploration. Benches and picnic tables offer places to relax. Friends of Spy Pond Park is an active volunteer organization. They oversee stewardship of the park. They sponsor clean-up projects and special events. The annual fall Spy Pond Fun Day is a highlight.
