This land whispers stories. Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to the area’s rich past. Before this park existed there stood the Isaac G Johnson & Co Ironworks. This foundry thrived during the Civil War perfecting the Delafield cannon. Can you imagine the clang of hammers the roar of the furnaces? The ironworks bordered the Spuyten Duyvil Canal. In 1919 to improve river traffic the canal was straightened. The ironworks was condemned. The land became quiet. Picturesque houses remain across the park entrance on Edsall Avenue a reminder of that quieter era. Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park itself officially opened in 1994 after a long battle. Local residents fought to keep developers from building high-rises. They envisioned this green space. They wanted to preserve the scenic views. The community rallied together. They secured the land for a park. Their efforts created Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park. The park’s history doesn’t end there. The Henry Hudson Bridge a majestic structure looms over the park. As Parks Commissioner Robert Moses situated the bridge’s northern column right in the park. Construction began in 1935. The bridge opened in 1936 becoming the longest plate girder bridge in the world. Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park offers more than just history. The Half Moon Overlook provides stunning views. It marks the spot where Henry Hudson’s ship is believed to have anchored in 1609. From here you can almost see Hudson’s journey unfolding. You can envision his exploration of this very river. The park is a haven for birdwatchers. Many bird species use the park for breeding or migration. Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park is more than a park. It’s a place where history nature and community converge. It’s a testament to perseverance and the power of community. Take a moment to absorb the beauty and the stories of this special place. Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park awaits your exploration.
