Is there a more peaceful sight than Spruce Lodge on a sunny afternoon? You might not guess it now, but Spruce Lodge was once a hive of activity. This grand Georgian country house, nestled in the heart of County Wicklow, was more than just a beautiful home. It was the dream of Joan Keogh, a woman deeply passionate about horses and their riders. Joan, considered a leading figure in Irish dressage, poured her heart and soul into building Spruce Lodge into an internationally recognized equestrian center. Here, amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery, she nurtured young talents and helped them reach for the stars. Spruce Lodge became a haven for equestrians of all levels, from beginners to those competing on the world stage. The facilities were second to none, boasting state-of-the-art training arenas, spacious stables, and sprawling paddocks. Joan’s vision extended beyond competition. She firmly believed in the therapeutic power of horses and developed Equisteps, a unique program designed to help individuals with physical and cognitive challenges. Sadly, Joan passed away in 2022. But her legacy lives on in the heart of Spruce Lodge. The equestrian center continues to thrive, a testament to her dedication. The next time you find yourself strolling the grounds of Spruce Lodge, take a moment to appreciate the passion and dedication that shaped this exceptional place. It’s a story of dreams realized and a testament to the enduring bond between humans and horses.
