Did Springwood always have this name? No. Originally, this area was part of a larger property known as “Wire Paddock”. This was back in the 1930s when Brigadier Sam Langford owned the vast 614-acre spread. It was called “Wire Paddock” because it was the first fenced property in the area, a testament to Langford’s forward-thinking approach. Eventually, the name changed to Springwood. The name was inspired by a natural spring found on the property. This area, now known as Springwood, sits within the traditional lands of the Yugambeh and Jaggera Aboriginal peoples. Their history here stretches back millennia, long before fences and freeways. Speaking of freeways, Springwood’s development is intrinsically linked to the South East Freeway to Brisbane. Planned as a satellite city conveniently located at the freeway’s end, Springwood began its transformation in the late 1960s. However, the freeway’s completion faced numerous delays, finally opening in 1985, almost two decades after the first land sales in Springwood. As families flocked to the burgeoning suburb, schools became essential. Springwood State High School and Springwood Central State School both opened in 1977. Chatswood Hills State School followed in 1983, alongside Calvary Christian College. Springwood even housed a popular IKEA store until 2006, when it relocated to Slacks Creek. Today, Springwood continues to evolve. Since the early 2000s, the Queensland government and Logan City Council have envisioned Springwood as a Principal Activity Centre, a hub of commerce and community life in the region. Springwood’s story is a fascinating blend of Indigenous heritage, ambitious development plans and the everyday lives of its residents.
