Did you know that the first shots of the War of 1812 were fired near Springwells Park? Springwells Park in Detroit holds a significant place in American history. It’s more than just a park. It’s a site steeped in centuries of stories. Long before the War of 1812 this area was home to indigenous settlements. Freshwater springs drew them to the sandy bluffs. These springs became a focal point for life and burial. Archaeological evidence reveals a large group of burial mounds. These mounds suggest Springwells was an important ceremonial center for much of the first millennium CE. Even on the eve of the War of 1812 Springwells remained a significant burial site. It was a place where Native people gathered for ceremonies and to live. The area’s strategic location provided access to essential resources. There were river bottomlands for farming. Forests nearby provided hunting and gathering opportunities. The Detroit River itself offered rich fishing marshes and vital transportation routes.

Then came the War of 1812. In July 1812 General William Hull established a military encampment at Springwells. The location was strategically advantageous. The high ground offered excellent defensive positions. It was closer to the British in Canada than Fort Detroit. On July 5th 1812 Hull learned that his men had fired the first shots of the war from Springwells. These shots were fired into British Canada across the Detroit River. The location quickly became a hub of military activity. Additional artillery pieces were brought from Fort Detroit. Floating batteries were constructed to bombard Amherstburg. From Springwells General Hull launched an ill-fated invasion of Canada.

Later the Treaty of Springwells in 1815 officially ended hostilities between the US and several Native Nations. It’s a lesser-known treaty. It followed the Treaty of Ghent but was crucial to securing lasting peace. The treaty was signed on the bluff at Springwells. This location was significant given its history as a sacred space and burial ground. The presence of the springs added to the significance of the location. This makes the Springwells Park a potent symbol of both conflict and reconciliation.

After the war Springwells continued to hold strategic importance. In 1843 construction of Fort Wayne began. This star-shaped fort was built on the bluff overlooking the river. Its construction unfortunately displaced the remaining Woodland burial mounds. The fort stands as a testament to the enduring significance of Springwells in shaping the history of Detroit and indeed the nation. So next time you visit Springwells Park remember the rich history beneath your feet. Remember the indigenous settlements the battles fought and the treaties made. It’s a place where the echoes of the past still resonate.
