Once a standalone institution Springfield Gardens High School now stands as a testament to adaptation. Let’s delve into the story of this educational landmark. Springfield Gardens High School opened its doors in 1965. For many years it served the local community as a traditional four-year high school.
However by the late 1970s Springfield Gardens High School faced challenges. Poor test scores and a high dropout rate became significant concerns. Despite these struggles the school continued to operate for several decades.
In June 2007 Springfield Gardens High School graduated its final class. This marked the end of an era for the institution. But it also paved the way for a new chapter.
The Springfield Gardens High School building was transformed. It became the Springfield Gardens Educational Campus. This campus houses four smaller schools. Each school has its own unique focus.
The four schools are Preparatory Academy for Writers. Queens Preparatory Academy is another. Excelsior Preparatory High School is also here. Finally there is George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences.
Excelsior Preparatory High School and George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences both emphasize science. They prepare students for college through partnerships. The Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education is one partner. This allows students to work with Queens College professors. Students gain internships in science-related fields. Excelsior Prep offers vocational training through the School of Cooperative Technical Education. George Washington Carver has a veterinary program.
Queens Preparatory Academy and the Preparatory Academy for Writers focus on humanities. Queens Prep has performing arts opportunities. The Preparatory Academy for Writers emphasizes journalism. It also emphasizes small group work.
Interestingly the Preparatory Academy for Writers includes sixth and seventh graders. It is the only school on the campus with junior high students. All four schools share facilities. These include a cafeteria a gymnasium a media center and outdoor fields.
Before its transformation Springfield Gardens High School had notable alumni. Lawrence Bush is an author and editor. Alan Jacobson is another author. Calvin Bruton played basketball in the NBA and Australian League. Pepa also known as Sandra Denton is a hip-hop artist. Charles Jenkins played basketball in the NBA. Susan B Landau was a film and television producer. Anthony Mason was a basketball player in the NBA and an All-Star. Eric V Moyé became a district judge. Mike Mazzei was a Wall Street executive. Phife Dawg was a rapper and member of A Tribe Called Quest. Norm Roberts is a basketball coach. Khandi Alexander is an actress. Mikey D is a rapper. Cliff Clinkscales is a basketball player.
Today the Springfield Gardens Educational Campus continues to serve students. It offers diverse educational opportunities. The campus represents a creative solution to the challenges faced by the original Springfield Gardens High School.
