What secrets does Spring Creek, Brooklyn hold? Well, let me tell you. Spring Creek Towers, also known as Starrett City, stands as a testament to ambitious urban planning and a complex history. Right here, on this peninsula nestled between Fresh Creek and Hendrix Creek, a “city within a city” was envisioned. Spring Creek Towers began its journey in 1962 when an investment group dreamt of Park Shore Village. This dream faltered, but the idea persisted. In 1967, the United Housing Foundation proposed Twin Pines Village, a cooperative housing project. This too met a roadblock, but from its ashes rose Starrett City in 1974, under the guidance of Starrett City Associates. Spring Creek Towers opened its doors with fanfare, a ceremony graced by Governor Malcolm Wilson and Mayor Abraham Beame. A dedicated minibus service and extended bus routes promised seamless connection to the wider city. The early days saw a bustling community take root, with the addition of a recreation center, a shopping mall, and even its own power plant. This power plant proved its worth during the 1977 blackout, keeping Spring Creek Towers brightly lit while the city plunged into darkness. The Starrett City Boxing Club, established in 1978, punched its way to fame, training future champions. The Spring Creek Sun, born as the Starrett City Sun in 1974, chronicled the community’s every step, from tenant association meetings to the arrival of new families. However, the path of Spring Creek Towers wasn’t without its bumps. Financial hurdles and controversies over racial quotas added layers of complexity to its story. The complex was even the subject of a lawsuit by the Reagan administration, challenging its affirmative action policies. Despite these challenges, Spring Creek Towers stands tall. It boasts over 5,881 apartments, a vibrant community, and a unique history. The name officially changed to Spring Creek Towers in 2002, marking a new chapter in its ongoing narrative. Though it continues to be fondly known as Starrett City by many, Spring Creek Towers embodies resilience, a community forged in the heart of Brooklyn.
