What began with nineteen dedicated Christians kneeling in prayer? It led to the establishment of Spring Creek Baptist Church. This church has become a beacon of faith in the Rayford Road area. It stands southeast of The Woodlands and west of the Grand Parkway.
Spring Creek Baptist Church started from humble beginnings. In July 1967, those nineteen Christians met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Blair, Jr. They sought unity and divine guidance. They agreed to start a church. They elected officers. They appointed a pastor. They established a church schedule by mutual consent. They also committed 10% of their income to a mission fund. This fund would aid those in genuine need.
Ward Phillips became the first pastor. The church initially operated under the name Full Gospel Baptist Church. The name changed to Spring Creek Baptist Church the following year. They first met in homes. Later, they gathered at Little Camp Penid. This was a non-denominational camp. They even met under a tent purchased for $100. In 1969, they completed a building on Lazy Lane.
In September 1969, Ward Phillips was called as the first full-time minister. His initial salary was tied to the church’s income. It was set between $25 and $75 monthly. In March 1970, he resigned. The church faced a crucial decision. Should they disband? Or should they seek a new pastor?
They chose to unite in prayer. They sought guidance from Spring Baptist Church. They then joined the Southern Baptist Convention. They also joined the Union Association. This partnership provided support.
Hollis Bass became pastor in July 1970. Under his leadership, the church allocated funds to missions. They sent 7% of offerings to the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program. 3% went to the Union Baptist Association. 2% supported the benevolence fund.
Throughout its history, Spring Creek Baptist Church has actively engaged in mission work. This is evident in its financial support and sponsorship of missions. In 1975, they helped sponsor a mission church in The Woodlands, TX. In 1976, they supported Hazy Hollow Baptist Church in Magnolia, TX.
Mike Mercer became pastor in 1980. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant growth. They built a gymnasium. They also constructed the children’s building known as “The Outback”. The AWANA program began in 1983.
In December 1992, Stephen Brazzel was called as pastor. The church adopted a new vision statement in February 1993. This focused on discipleship. It also focused on outreach to North Harris and South Montgomery counties.
Michael Borghese became pastor in March 2015. Spring Creek Baptist Church continues to serve the growing community. It shares the Gospel of Christ. It reaches out to those seeking a church home.
Today, Spring Creek Baptist Church extends a warm invitation. They welcome all to gather. They encourage all to grow in faith. They urge all to go out and serve.
