Tucked between Broadway and Spring Street, the Spring Arcade Building whispers tales of a bygone era. The Spring Arcade Building isn’t just a building. It’s a journey through time, a city within a city. The Spring Arcade Building opened in 1924. It replaced the Mercantile Place, a bustling alley that had been a Los Angeles landmark for over forty years. The architects, Kenneth McDonald and Maurice Couchot, envisioned a grand structure that would preserve the alley’s charm while adding a touch of European elegance. Their winning design, inspired by London’s Burlington Arcade, resulted in the magnificent structure we see today. Two twelve-story office towers stand sentinel, connected by a three-level, glass-roofed arcade. Imagine stepping into this sunlit passage. Intricate Spanish Baroque terracotta arches greet you, framing the entrances. Thin, twisted columns support delicate arches along the basement level. The arcade stretches 826 feet long and 26 feet wide. Originally, it housed sixty-one shops, each a unique world of its own. Look up and admire the glass skylight. It bathes the arcade in a warm, inviting glow. A Venetian-style bridge, added later, spans the center of the arcade, completing the picturesque scene. The Spring Arcade Building has seen its share of transformations. It has housed everything from barber shops and candy stores to a post office and even bowling lanes. In the 1930s, radio station KRKD added its mark, erecting broadcast towers on the roof. These towers, now silent sentinels, remain as a reminder of the building’s rich history. Today, the Spring Arcade Building has been revitalized. It thrives as a blend of modern apartments and bustling ground-floor businesses. Restaurants, cafes, and bars now fill the spaces where shops once stood. Yet, the echoes of the past still linger. As you stroll through the arcade, imagine the crowds that once filled this space. The shoppers, the businessmen, the families, all drawn to the allure of this “city within a city”. The Spring Arcade Building stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Los Angeles. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine, where the past whispers stories to the present.
