Haven’t you ever thought about what lies beneath the surface of sports history? Here at the Sporttauchermuseum Berlin you can discover a world of aquatic artifacts. This museum isn’t just a collection. It’s a journey into the depths of German sport and beyond.
The Sporttauchermuseum Berlin evolved from East Berlin’s preparations to establish a national sports museum for the GDR. This spanned from 1978 to 1990. In 1995 it became part of the City Museum Foundation. Since 1997 it has been located in the Olympiapark Berlin. The Sporttauchermuseum also includes the Wassersportmuseum in Grünau.
Imagine over 100000 objects. Add to that a photo collection of around 1.5 million images. This makes it Germany’s largest sports collection. The library holds approximately 37000 volumes. These volumes cover sports history over three centuries. It also contains all German sports association journals. These journals come from both East and West Germany. They span from 1945/46 to 1989.
The Sporttauchermuseum Berlin explores the meaning of sport. It researches sport’s diversity in Berlin. It studies German and transnational history. This is achieved through research education collections and exhibitions.
The museum sees itself as a dynamic space. Here discussions start. New forms of education are tested. Exhibition practices evolve. The aim is to create an inclusive place. It should be diverse and participatory. Sport history can be experienced here. It can be researched and explored in all its complexity.
Unfortunately the Sporttauchermuseum Berlin is currently closed. This closure is until the end of 2025. It is due to renovation work. They are preparing for a future permanent exhibition.
