Fifty years. That’s how long Sportpsychologie has been making its mark at the University of Münster. Right here on the Leonardo-Campus, in this university building, minds and bodies connect. Sportpsychologie isn’t just about sports. It delves into the human experience. It explores the causes, conditions, and goals behind our actions in sports. The department uses motor and psychological diagnostics to predict and influence behavior. In 1974, Professor Willi Essing started it all. He built the Sportpsychologie department from the ground up. Professor Bernd Strauss took over in 1998. He ushered in an era of growth, focusing on research with doctoral and post-doctoral positions. This shift led to numerous dissertations and habilitations, further solidifying Sportpsychologie’s reputation. The department has blossomed. It has supported over 50 staff members throughout the years. International collaborations and interdisciplinary projects like the “Trust and Communication in a Digital World” graduate program have enriched the department. Sportpsychologie continues to evolve, driven by a spirit of continuity and change. Professor Strauss will retire soon. His legacy leaves a lasting impact on the field, and the future of Sportpsychologie at the University of Münster remains bright.
