“A champion’s spirit echoes here.” Sportplatz “Willi Sänger” is more than just a sports center. It’s a testament to a man who embodied both athleticism and unwavering resistance. Willi Sänger, born in Berlin in 1894, wasn’t just a high jumper of international renown. He was a fervent communist and a key figure in the fight against Nazi oppression. Here at Sportplatz “Willi Sänger”, we honor his memory. Sänger’s passion for sports led him to chair the “Fichte” workers’ sports club in southeast Berlin. He later became a leader in the “Kampfgemeinschaft für Rote Sporteinheit,” a communist sports organization. This very sports center, inaugurated in 1958, bears a memorial to him: a sandstone block inscribed with his name, birthdate, and date of execution. Beyond athletics, Sänger’s life took a courageous turn during World War II. He worked tirelessly, gathering intelligence on public sentiment and delivering crucial reports to the Communist Party leadership. He even managed to procure the Gestapo’s “wanted list,” a feat that undoubtedly saved lives. Imagine the weight of such a secret, carried within these very grounds. Tragically, Sänger’s bravery was met with betrayal. Arrested in July 1944, he was sentenced to death and executed on November 27th at Brandenburg-Görden Prison. His final letter, penned just hours before his execution, reveals a man of remarkable composure, facing his fate with courage and conviction. His words resonate with the spirit of this place, a place named in his honor. Sportplatz “Willi Sänger” stands as a reminder. It’s not just a place for sports, but a place where the echoes of a true champion’s spirit, both in athletics and in the fight for freedom, continue to inspire.
