Is this where that famous handball player trained? Standing before you is the Sporthalle Rauschwalde. It’s a relatively new structure, built in 2007. But don’t let its youth fool you. The Sporthalle Rauschwalde has a fascinating past connected to its predecessor, the Ulberhalle. This older hall, named after anti-fascist Erhard Ulber, stood on these very grounds during the GDR era. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, it had to be closed in 2002. For a few years, it enjoyed a brief second life as an ice rink. But eventually, the old hall was demolished in 2006 to make way for the modern Sporthalle Rauschwalde we see today. This new sports hall boasts a capacity of 199 spectators, with seating and standing room for avid fans. The playing field itself is designed to meet the standards of the International Handball Federation. Interestingly, even German handball star Lars Kaufmann, who trained in the former Ulberhalle, graced the opening ceremony of the Sporthalle Rauschwalde. Today, the Sporthalle Rauschwalde isn’t just for professional athletes; it’s a bustling hub for the local community. Around 650 students from nearby schools use it for their physical education classes. Various sports clubs also utilize the space for training and competitions. The Sporthalle Rauschwalde stands as a testament to the evolution of sports and community spirit.
