On this sprawling 33-hectare expanse lies Sportanlage Süd, one of Southern Germany’s largest municipal sports facilities. Sportanlage Süd is more than just a sports center. It’s a testament to Augsburg’s commitment to athletics and community well-being. Imagine 13 football fields, each meeting DFB minimum size requirements for league matches. Add to that six training fields, basketball courts, fistball fields, a hockey AstroTurf field, a throwing field, and a 400-meter running track. Sportanlage Süd truly has something for every sports enthusiast. Non-club members are welcome too. After work, hobby athletes can enjoy the illuminated Max-Gutmann running path or the illuminated cross-country ski trail in winter. This 1730-meter loop of joint-friendly crushed sand offers a perfect setting for an evening jog. Kilometer markers guide runners, and changing rooms, lockers, and showers are available in the sports field building on Ilsungstraße. The use of the running path, changing rooms, and showers is free of charge. The Max-Gutmann running path is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm. It is closed on holidays and Christmas. During winter months, the opening hours depend on weather conditions. For those who prefer a wooded run, Sportanlage Süd sits at the edge of the Siebentischwald forest. Three marked jogging trails—3, 5, and 8 kilometers long—wind through the forest. There’s also a marked 10-kilometer road route. You can find an overview of the running routes at Sportanlage Süd in the Augsburg runner’s city map. During the winter months, when snow cover reaches 15 centimeters, the city of Augsburg grooms a 1-kilometer cross-country ski trail at Sportanlage Süd. This trail caters to both classic and skating styles, and floodlights illuminate it until 8:30 pm on weekdays. Sportanlage Süd was further enhanced in 2020 with the construction of a new changing and operations building. This project, part of the city’s sports and swimming pool development plan, reflects Augsburg’s ongoing dedication to providing top-notch sports facilities for its citizens. Sportanlage Süd isn’t just a place to break a sweat; it’s a place where Augsburg comes together, united by the power of sport and community.
