Founded on July 1 1923 Sport Clube Rio Tinto boasts a rich history. A group of local Rio Tinto residents including Serafim Pinto Morgado and João de Sousa Nogueira spearheaded its creation. Their initial kit was white with a red diagonal stripe and red cuffs. Later it changed to orange thanks to a donation from a hosiery factory.

Early enthusiasm was high particularly in Venda Nova and Estação. However internal disagreements caused a split in 1926 leading to the formation of Clube Atlético de Rio Tinto. Matches between these rivals became legendary local events. Imagine the intensity games beginning at 10 am 1 pm and 3 pm with intense rivalry. In 1927 they first played officially ending in a 2-2 draw. Players like Abel Cardoso Artur Padeiro and Rosalino Proveira became local heroes.

World War II brought difficulties. The club suspended activities until 1945. A new generation of enthusiasts including Arnaldo Neves and António F Moura revived Sport Clube Rio Tinto. They continued using the now commonly described yellow kit and played at the Ferraria grounds.

The club’s success continued. In 1988 they were made honorary members of the Porto Football Association and were crowned District Champions in 1988/89. Gondomar council awarded them a Sports Merit Medal in 1990.

A long-held dream was fulfilled in 2001 with the opening of their new stadium. The Estadio Cidade de Rio Tinto offered excellent facilities and great transport links. The club now has teams at every level training and competing hundreds of young players. Its ongoing commitment to youth development ensures a bright future for Sport Clube Rio Tinto. The Trophy Room and Events Hall opened for the club’s 90th anniversary. Sport Clube Rio Tinto is more than a football club it’s a symbol of Rio Tinto’s enduring spirit and community pride.
