Hidden within the Lombard countryside stands Spino d’Adda. A town steeped in history. A place where legends whisper on the wind.

Spino d’Adda boasts a rich past stretching back to the Middle Ages. It was then part of the Duchy of Milan. In 1389 Bernabò Visconti ordered a castle built. This served as a crucial defense point on the Adda River border.

But the battle of Agnadello in 1509 changed everything. Also known as the Battle of Spino this devastating conflict destroyed the castle. Much of Spino d’Adda’s medieval heritage vanished with it. The castle was built of large red bricks. It had towers and deep moats crossed by a drawbridge. Underground tunnels and sophisticated siege defenses existed. Only the basements and tower foundations survived.

Count Giuseppe Casati a first feudal lord of the Casati family oversaw early reconstruction. Another Count Giuseppe later expanded the palace. The final work was between the late 1700s and early 1800s. Today this structure is known as Villa Casati Zineroni Dell’Orto a private residence.

A cylindrical tower stands near the villa. Count Giuseppe Casati built it in 1818. It was a minaret a fashionable observation tower. Its peak has a lantern and small dome.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Bosco also stands near Spino d’Adda. This Marian place of worship sits on an old country road. It links Spino d’Adda and Barbuzzera.

Legend tells of Alessandro Ciseri. A man captured and chained by gendarmes. As they led him to Lodi prison near the religious image his chains broke. He escaped. Ciseri returned leaving his manacles and chain as an offering. These remained until a theft in the late 20th century. Many faithful visited. Their donations funded the church’s construction.
