Have you ever wondered what Sammy Davis Jr. and a state-of-the-art casino have in common? The answer lies right here, at the Spielbank Hohensyburg in Dortmund. This isn’t just any casino. It’s a place where the thrill of roulette wheels mingles with the echoes of historical events. The Spielbank Hohensyburg first opened its doors in 1985. The grand opening featured a concert by none other than Sammy Davis Jr. Architect Harald Deilmann designed the striking building, nestled near the Hohensyburg ruins. This location is steeped in history, within the archaeological site of a Saxon Wallburg. The Spielbank Hohensyburg wasn’t just about games of chance. It quickly became a cultural hub. It even hosted the first AIDS gala in the region in 1987. Inside, the casino offers a variety of games. You’ll find American Roulette, Black Jack, Poker, and a wide array of slot machines. The Spielbank Hohensyburg has also seen several renovations. The first major remodel of the classic gaming area happened in 1998. Another large-scale renovation took place in 2012, modernizing the facilities while keeping its unique charm. The Spielbank Hohensyburg wasn’t always under private ownership. Originally owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, it was part of a group of four casinos. In 2021, the state sold all four casinos, including the Spielbank Hohensyburg, to the Gauselmann Group. This sale marked a turning point. It also led to the casino’s renaming as the Merkur Spielbank Hohensyburg. Today, the Spielbank Hohensyburg continues to draw visitors. People come for the excitement of the games and the stunning views. They also come for the history and the cultural experiences. The Spielbank Hohensyburg. It’s more than just a casino.
