Imagine. Thousands of signs and posters. They line the path of the former Berlin Wall. These aren’t just replicas of historic banners. They’re a dialogue. A conversation between the past and the present. The demands of citizens in 1989-90 speak to the hopes of people today. The installation stretches for four kilometers. It’s a journey through history. A powerful and moving experience.
Some signs are replicas of those carried during the mass protests. Others are brand new. Created in workshops this year. They reflect freedom’s ongoing struggle. Democracy isn’t a given. It’s something that needs to be defended. Always. You see slogans like “Freedom gives wings”. Or “Walls are planned built and torn down in people’s minds”. Powerful statements. Statements that still resonate today.
On November 8th and 9th 2024 Spiegelwelten was open to the public. Twenty-four hours a day. Free of charge. Multimedia installations accompanied the signs. Four large video cubes added another layer to the experience. November 9th hosted a Festival for Freedom. Talks concerts and performances took place. It was a celebration of freedom. A commemoration of the victims.
