Unearthed beneath the turf lies Speke Keeill. Its stones whisper tales of a forgotten past. This unassuming site near Mount Murray golf course is far more than a ruin. Speke Keeill is a small simple chapel. It’s one of many keeills found on the Isle of Man. These chapels were built between the 6th and 12th centuries. The word keeill comes from the Manx Gaelic meaning chapel.

Speke Keeill holds a special place in Manx history. It wasn’t always a quiet corner of a golf course. The Time Team’s 2006 excavation revealed much more. They unearthed the keeill’s walls. These walls were made of Manx slate and granite blocks. The walls had collapsed inwards. They had been supported by a turf bank. The original altar remained. It was constructed of thin Manx slate slabs. White pebbles lay inside and around it. The floor was likely hardened earth. The doorway was in the southwest corner of the south wall. A small square structure nearby might have been a reliquary. It was lined with white quartz stones.

Archaeologists found more than just the keeill’s structure. A slate slab with an incised cross was discovered. This may have been a grave marker reused in the keeill. The most exciting discovery was an Ogham stone. Ogham is an ancient script. It originated in Ireland. The Speke Keeill Ogham stone dates from the 8th to 12th centuries. Its inscription BAC OCOICAT IALL is believed to be casual rather than formal.

The site’s history extends far beyond the keeill itself. Beneath the keeill lay a Christian cemetery. This was built on an even older Bronze Age burial ground. Graves dating back to the late 6th century were found. One grave contained a remarkably preserved plait of hair. Radiocarbon dating revealed that several graves dated to the 6th and 7th centuries. These predate the keeill. The keeill was likely built within an existing cemetery. This pattern is seen at other Manx sites.

Speke Keeill is more than just stones and earth. It’s a timeline of human history. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. It reflects the changing religious landscape of the Isle of Man. Each stone holds a piece of the puzzle. Together they paint a vivid picture of life on the Isle of Man.
