Picture Speedwell United Methodist Church standing proudly. This isn’t just any church in Savannah Georgia. It’s a place steeped in history a beacon of faith in the Sandfly area. Established in 1885 it originally served a small community then known as Millett. This was long before the area became part of Savannah.

The church’s name Speedwell has a charming origin. It was named after a nearby stagecoach stop and post office. Can you imagine the hustle and bustle of that era? Wagons rattling along dusty roads people exchanging news and stories. Speedwell was a vital hub a meeting place.

Two remarkable women Olga Brabham Dunbar and Savannah Barker Bates spearheaded the fundraising efforts. They traveled far and wide collecting donations. Their dedication is inspiring. Their efforts laid the foundation for the spiritual home that Speedwell would become.

The first church building was eventually replaced. Construction on the current building started in 1922. The Great Depression unfortunately halted progress. The building wasn’t finally dedicated until 1941. Think of the perseverance it took to complete this project. Despite economic hardships faith prevailed.

Speedwell’s congregation thrived for decades. However times changed. By the 1960s attendance dwindled. In 1969 a difficult decision was made. The congregation merged with Swallow Savannah Methodist Church. Regular services at Speedwell ceased in 1970. Yet the spirit of Speedwell lives on. Occasional homecoming services are still held.

Today Speedwell United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It’s a reminder of the rich history woven into the fabric of Savannah. It’s a story of dedication resilience and the enduring power of the human spirit. A place where history echoes in the quiet of its hallowed halls. A testament to the unwavering faith of those who built it and those who continue to remember it.
