Remember 1898. That was the year of the Spanish-American War. This conflict shaped our nation. Here we stand before the Spanish-American War Monument. It honors Wayne County’s brave volunteers.
Dedicated in 1932 this monument stands as a testament. It commemorates the 2500 local volunteers. They fought in the Spanish-American War. The monument was sculpted by Allen G. Newman. He was a very talented artist.
Look closely at the bronze figures. You will see a Navy sailor and an Army infantryman. They represent the forces in the war. The figures stand against a white granite wall and base. The Spanish-American War Monument honors the courage and sacrifice.
The Spanish-American War was ostensibly to aid Cuba. Cuba struggled for independence from Spain. America’s interests were complex. Many Americans supported the war. They saw Cuba’s revolution like their own.
The USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor. This event triggered war. The Navy was ready but the Army wasn’t. 220000 men volunteered from state National Guard units.
The war was fought in the Pacific and Caribbean. It lasted just ten weeks. The U.S. gained Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines. The Philippines gained independence in 1946.
Allen G. Newman designed this monument. The Army figure is a smaller version of “The Hiker”. “The Hiker” is his famous sculpture.
Notice the inscriptions on the base. “Cuba” and “Puerto Rico” are inscribed. Also inscribed are China and the Philippines. The monument recognizes service in the Philippines Insurrection. It also acknowledges the Chinese Relief Expedition from 1898 to 1902.
The County Board of Supervisors provided $15000 for the Spanish-American War Monument. The City Plan Commission approved the design in 1931. The monument includes a bronze soldier on the west. A bronze sailor is on the east side.
