Space Science and Technology Building

Nestled in the heart of Rice University, the Space Science and Technology Building has a rich history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. This building has witnessed groundbreaking discoveries and innovations, particularly in nanotechnology. The Space Science and Technology Building underwent a complete renovation, breathing new life into its historic walls. The project included new infrastructure and state-of-the-art finishes. This renovation supported a new Class 1000 Cleanroom, advanced Molecular Science Laser Labs, and cutting-edge Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Labs. It also houses the Department of Chemistry chair and the Environmental Health & Safety Office System. Interestingly, the Environmental Health & Safety department remained fully operational during the entire renovation process. Their 2,500 square foot space was equipped with temporary services. This allowed the replacement of all building infrastructure without disrupting their crucial work. Adjacent spaces were strategically demolished and partially rebuilt before the EHS office renovation began. To complete the finishes, the EHS team briefly relocated to a temporary off-site office for six weeks. Before their move back, all services were seamlessly switched over to the building’s permanent utilities. Another logistical feat involved the loading dock. It remained operational throughout the construction. This ensured the continuous receiving and distribution of chemicals across the campus. Even the campus helium recovery system, housed in the building’s basement, remained operational. Temporary services were cleverly brought in from the adjacent building for added stability and reliability until the permanent utilities were switched over. The Space Science and Technology Building is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of Rice University. It stands as a hub of scientific advancement, constantly pushing the boundaries of knowledge.
