Why is Space Mountain only six feet shorter than Cinderella’s Castle? That’s what happens when your ride is 183 feet tall! Space Mountain has loomed over Tomorrowland since 1975. It has terrified and delighted generations of parkgoers. But did you know that Walt Disney himself envisioned this ride? It all began with a postcard of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Walt sent it to his engineers with a simple message: “Build This”. The Matterhorn Bobsleds became a reality in 1959. Walt, always the innovator, then set his sights on a space-themed coaster. He wanted to recreate the darkness of space. To achieve this, the ride would have to be fully enclosed. This was a groundbreaking concept at the time. John Hench, a legendary Imagineer, designed the iconic exterior we see today. Space Mountain finally opened in 1975. It became an instant success and a testament to Walt Disney’s vision.
