Where does the name Sovico come from? It might surprise you. Sovico’s origins trace back to ancient times. The elevated position of the town may have inspired its name. “Summus vicus” is Latin for “highest village”. Over time, “Summus vicus” evolved into “Suigum” and “Suycum”. Finally, it became Sovico.

Sovico sits in Lombardy. More specifically, it is in the province of Monza and Brianza. Milan is only 20 kilometers southwest of Sovico. Imagine life in Sovico. You are close to a major city but live in a smaller town.

Sovico has a rich history. The earliest record of Sovico dates back to November 11, 879. Ansperto da Biassono, the Archbishop of Milan, left a bequest to his nephew. An act from January 15, 998, mentions real estate in “valle summovico.”

By 2004, Sovico had 7,329 residents. It occupied an area of about 3.2 square kilometers. Its population density was about 2,347 inhabitants per square kilometer. In 2018, the population rose to 8,359. The town’s density was about 2,600 people per square kilometer.

The Lambro River flows east of Sovico. This river marks the border with Triuggio. A major highway connects Monza and Carate. This road and the railway are vital transport links for the area.

Residential and industrial areas occupy 43% of Sovico. Non-urban areas account for the remaining 57%. The Lambro Valley lies east of Giovanni da Sovico Street. This valley covers 32 hectares and has hydrogeological restrictions.

Sovico’s coat of arms dates back to the 18th century. It is linked to the old Sovico family from Lombardy. The town’s flag features blue and red.

Sovico has several well-known companies. These include Beta Utensili, Canali, Reggiani, Parà, and Villa Giocattoli.

The church in Sovico has a history spanning over a thousand years. The Cardinal Schuster said Sovico embraced Christianity early after the 313 Edict of Constantine. The “Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani” mentions “ecclesia Sancti Fidelis” in Sovico. A document from 1562 says the church was dedicated to Saints Simone and Giuda.

The town of Sovico faced tax disputes in the 17th century. Along with Giussano and Albiate, Sovico refused to pay taxes to the Balbiani family in 1611. Eventually, the feudatories won the dispute.

In 1770, Pietro Andreoli acquired Sovico. The French rule in 1796 abolished all noble titles and feudal privileges.

Sovico has grown over the centuries. In 1530, there were 24 families. By 1751, the population was 500. Today, Sovico continues to evolve. It preserves its history while embracing the future.
