A frozen lake, a playground, and a fighter jet. These are just a few snapshots from the vibrant history of Soverel Park in East Orange, New Jersey. Soverel Park wasn’t always a place for baseball games and leisurely strolls. Long before its designation as a park, the land belonged to Mathias Soverel. The property was best known for its large lake, Springdale. This lake was a vital resource for the community, supplying ice for iceboxes before the era of electric refrigerators. A smaller pond on the property offered a delightful spot for ice skating in winter. Imagine Christmas morning in 1896: families gathered on Soverel’s Skating Pond, children bundled in warm clothes, the crisp air filled with laughter as a mule-drawn sled offered festive rides.

Soverel Field officially opened as a playground in 1929. The grand opening was a community celebration, marked by various activities. A spirited marbles tournament captured the youthful energy of the new park. Decades later, around 1950, Soverel Field showcased a unique addition. Park director Graham M. Skea, a man of initiative, secured a surplus Navy fighter plane. He arranged its transport from Philadelphia and installed it in the park, a striking symbol of the times. This plane became a local landmark, further enriching the park’s history. Today, Soverel Park stands as the largest park in East Orange. It boasts two baseball fields, a softball field, a walking track, three basketball courts, seven tennis courts, two playgrounds, and a field house. It’s a hub for local sports, serving as the practice field for the East Orange Jr. Jaguars Football Team and hosting little league baseball and soccer games. Soverel Park has evolved from a frozen lake supplying ice to a vibrant community space. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of East Orange and a place where history and recreation intertwine.
