Fancy a relaxing holiday? Souvala in Chalkidiki might be just the place. It offers a genuine Greek experience. Let me tell you more about this charming town.

Souvala has a rich history. It once served as Aegina’s main port. This was during the 900 years when pirates forced people inland. From 900 to 1800 AD, Souvala handled most of the island’s sea traffic. In the first half of the 20th century, Souvala exported goods. Grapes, sponges and carob were among its main exports.

The name Souvala has interesting origins. It comes from man-made underground water tanks. These included ancient cisterns near Thermae, now called Loutra. These mineral water springs were known since antiquity. The spa here was famous in Europe. People believed its waters could treat arthritis, rheumatism, and skin problems. Digestive issues were also believed to be relieved by these waters. Unfortunately, the spa has been closed for years now.

Souvala is Aegina’s second ferry port. Many Athenians and mainlanders arrive here. This may contribute to its authentic Greek atmosphere. The town has a crescent-shaped harbor. Fishing boats bob gently in the water.

During the summer, Souvala truly comes alive. Families and couples stroll along the paralia. This paved area lines the harbor. They come to enjoy the setting sun. At night, the lights of Attiki, Piraeus, and the Athenian Coast twinkle in the distance.

Souvala is a great base for exploring the area. You can find hotels, private houses, and apartments to rent here. The harbor area offers tavernas and cafes with sea views. There are also shops, a supermarket and newsagents for your convenience.

Swimming is also a popular activity here. There is a small beach called Loutra just outside the village. Agii and Vagia are other nearby swimming spots. The beaches here usually have shallow waters and sandy bottoms. This makes them perfect for families.

Consider taking some interesting walks. Explore the small mountains of Agii. Walk up to Palaia Chora. Visit Agios Nektarios. You can even walk to the Afaia Temple. Enjoy the beauty of nature. Take in the panoramic views during your walk.

Souvala offers a combination of relaxation and exploration. Its history, harbor and beaches provide a memorable experience. Whether for a day trip or a longer stay, Souvala welcomes you. Enjoy the Greek atmosphere. Discover its unique charm.
