“Ever heard of a church that helped launch a prison ministry?” Southwest Bible Chapel in Denver isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a place with a rich history. This unassuming building on West Florida Avenue has been a cornerstone of the community since 1957. It wasn’t always known for its spiritual impact though.

In the late 1980s Southwest Bible Chapel became the unlikely launchpad for Set Free Prison Ministries. Leonard and Wilma Dare members of the church learned of a need for prison ministry coordinators through a prayer guide. They contacted Set Free Prison Ministries in California. Phil Wagner traveled to Denver to speak at Southwest Bible Chapel. His talks inspired the church to start a local branch.

Leonard Dare spearheaded this incredible initiative. He along with Jim Reynolds and Ed Jeanjaquet formed a non-profit organization. They rented space secured tax-exempt status and set up shop. The chapel became the base of operations for years. They even used a computer to grade correspondence courses for inmates. Imagine the logistical challenge back then. The ministry used Southwest Bible Chapel as its base until 2018. Today the ministry operates from a different location. The story of Set Free Prison Ministries is a testament to the power of faith and community action. It’s a story directly linked to Southwest Bible Chapel’s legacy.

The chapel has a current pastor too. Pastor Arnie Guin arrived in 2022. He has an impressive background. Before entering ministry he worked with the University of Alabama’s men’s basketball program. He’s dedicated to empowering others in their faith journey. His experience in mentoring athletes shows his commitment to the next generation. His life story highlights the diverse paths people take to serve. Pastor Guin and his family add to the vibrant tapestry of this church.

Southwest Bible Chapel stands here not just as a building but as a symbol. It represents faith community service and a remarkable partnership with Set Free Prison Ministries. It’s a reminder that even the most unassuming places can have extraordinary stories to tell. This is a place where faith is lived out daily. So take a moment reflect on the legacy of this inspiring house of worship.
