African Americans founded it after enduring years of disrespect in other burial grounds. They were forced to use back gates and even wade through swamps. They decided to create their own dignified space. Nine courageous Black businessmen petitioned the state for a charter. Their legacy lives on in this beautiful place. Southview Cemetery is the oldest African-American non-profit corporation in the country. Over 80000 African Americans rest here. Many made significant contributions to American history. Scholars business owners pastors professors military heroes musicians athletes and civil rights activists are buried here. Some notable figures initially rested at Southview before being moved. Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Dr Benjamin Mays were among them. Lt Henry O Flipper the first African American to graduate from West Point was also initially buried here. His remains were later moved to a military cemetery closer to his home. Southview Cemetery is more than just a resting place. It’s a testament to resilience determination and community.
