How about a secret whispered among the trees of Southside Park? This is Atlanta’s largest park, spanning 211 acres. But it wasn’t always a recreational haven.
Southside Park has a history. The City of Atlanta has owned the park since the 1970s. In 2002, the Trust for Public Land added 44 acres. This addition made Southside Park the city’s largest.
For years, Southside Park remained largely undeveloped. It was inaccessible to many. There was a baseball diamond. There was also a concession stand and a parking lot. Eight tennis courts existed. But they were in poor condition.
Access was limited. Only one entrance existed on Jonesboro Road. Gates intended to deter crime also kept people out. This limited the park’s potential.
The city recognized this. In 2007, a Master Plan was completed. It aimed to guide future development. The plan sought to create a long-term vision for Southside Park.
Several issues needed addressing. These included the park’s underuse. Inadequate lighting and access were problems. Aircraft noise from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was a concern. Also, incompatible land uses surrounded the park.
The Master Plan divided Southside Park into five districts. Each had a unique theme. One district focused on revenue generation through active amenities. It was located within the airport noise contour. Another district catered to all ages with active recreation. An event district was planned for gatherings. A passive woodlands and meadow district offered tranquility. Finally, a water and nature district highlighted Poole Creek.
In 2013, the city funded a trail study. The International Mountain Bicycling Association conducted it. The study envisioned 6.5 miles of natural surface trails. These trails would be suitable for bikers, runners, and hikers.
The planned trails followed a stacked loop system. This guided visitors through progressively challenging terrain. The system included beginner, intermediate, and advanced loops. A boardwalk and bridge would cross Poole Creek.
In 2016, the 1.2-mile beginner loop was built. Recreational Equipment, Inc. donated the funds. The Southern Offroad Bicycling Association managed the construction. The city and community celebrated the opening of the Evergreen Trail.
Additional trail construction will happen as funds are raised. Southside Park is becoming a recreational destination. It is a place where nature and community connect. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.
