Could a church built on Park Lane hold the key to understanding Southside Church of God? Let’s explore the vibrant history of Southside Church of God right here in San Antonio. Southside Church of God’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith, growth, and community. The journey begins in 1964 with Reverend Walter Collier and Della. A small group of just thirteen members formed the church, holding their first services at Mayo Chapel on Avon Street Extension. Maynard Wood served as the church clerk, diligently recording the early chapters of Southside’s story. In 1966, a significant step forward. Southside Church of God purchased a property on Park Lane, establishing a more permanent home. The church continued to flourish under the guidance of various pastors over the years. Reverend Fred Bonham and Margaret led the congregation from 1970 to 1975, a period that included the purchase of a parsonage in 1971. Then came Reverend Roy S. Newcomb and Lucille from 1975 to 1981, followed by Reverend L. Allen Robertson and Judy in 1981 and 1982. From 1982 to 1988, Reverend Jonathan King and Judy shepherded the congregation. A pivotal moment arrived in 1985. Southside Church of God purchased the land where it stands today and constructed its current facilities. This marked a new era for the church, providing a larger space to accommodate its growing community. Under Reverend Charles Hollifield and Mary from 1988 to 1990, and then from 1990 to the present day with Reverend Larry Hudson and Rhonda, Southside continued to evolve. The church embraced improvements and expansions. In 1993, a new sign proudly displayed the church’s name. In 1995, a new steeple reached towards the heavens. The same year, Southside purchased a church van and celebrated the retirement of its debt. Further enhancements included new audio and video systems, upgraded windows, and a new roof for the parsonage. The parsonage’s bathrooms and kitchen also received a much-needed remodel. Improvements continued into the 21st century. A new roof for the church in 2009. Drainage improvements in the parking lot in 2010. The side porch and sidewalk were rebuilt in 2010 as well, ensuring accessibility and safety for all who entered. In 2012, new windows were installed in the parsonage, and vinyl siding enhanced its exterior. This same year saw the launch of the SON (Serving Others Needs) ministry. This program empowers youth and children to express their faith through service, teaching them valuable skills like carpentry, painting, and lawn care. The ministry focuses on addressing community needs, fostering a spirit of giving back. The parsonage saw further upgrades with a front porch in 2013 and a back porch on the church in 2014, along with the installation of central heating and air conditioning. The sanctuary was also remodeled, and the audio/visual equipment received another upgrade. Southside Church of God’s story is one of continuous growth and dedication to its community.
