Eight bronze sculptures stand proudly. They guard the Kelvin Way Bridge. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s the Southern Gateway Sculpture in Glasgow. Built between 1913 and 1914 this magnificent structure extends the South Gate entrance. It creates a grand boulevard through Kelvingrove Park. The old South Gate Bridge was demolished to make way for this impressive design.

The bridge itself is a single segmental masonry arch. It’s made of red sandstone. It boasts a generous roadway 18 meters wide. But it’s the sculptures that truly captivate. Paul Raphael Montford created them. They represent different aspects of Glasgow’s life. Originally commissioned in 1914 they weren’t erected until around 1920.

Each pair of figures sits on high pedestals. They flank sandstone pillars. The pillars are carved with intricate strapwork. They’re topped with four dolphin heads and a lamp standard. One pair represents Peace and War. Another depicts Progress and Prosperity. Navigation and Shipbuilding are represented by another pair. Commerce and Industry are the themes of the final pair.

Sadly these majestic works of art were damaged during the Second World War. A German air raid caused considerable damage. Yet they remain a testament to Glasgow’s resilience and artistic spirit. They tell a story of peace war prosperity and industry. All aspects of the city’s vibrant history.

Notice how the sculptures interact with the bridge’s architecture. The bronze figures complement the red sandstone. This blend of materials and artistic styles makes the Southern Gateway a truly unique landmark. It’s a gateway not just to Kelvingrove Park but also to Glasgow’s rich past. This stunning bridge speaks volumes about the city’s ambitions. It showcases its engineering prowess and its artistic soul.

The Southern Gateway Sculpture is much more than a bridge. It’s a symbol. It represents Glasgow’s history. It represents its culture and spirit. Take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship. Let yourself be drawn into the stories these sculptures tell.
