Initially conceived as the West Santa Ana Branch Transit Corridor the name proved confusing. Many felt it didn’t reflect the line’s actual location or its destination. After a community-driven renaming process the Southeast Gateway Line was born. A name chosen by the people it will serve. This reflects a desire for a stronger connection to the communities the line will benefit.
The Southeast Gateway Line faces challenges. A lawsuit by Cerritos over route selection created delays and disputes. The city wanted an underground option. Metro argued it was too expensive. The final environmental impact report is certified. Construction is set to begin. This will mean relocating existing freight railroads reconfiguring intersections. This is just the first phase of a multi-billion dollar project.
This ambitious undertaking requires significant funding. A total of $8.6 billion is needed for the entire project. Measure M and Measure R provided initial funding. However additional funding is being sought from the Federal Transit Administration. This is essential to fully fund the project.
The Southeast Gateway Line’s construction is expected to take over a decade. The completion is slated for 2035 or possibly 2043 for the full line. The first phase from Slauson Station to Artesia is scheduled for earlier completion. The project includes a total of twelve stations. Some will be above ground some at grade others underground. This provides an efficient transportation system.
