Did you know that South University in Savannah has a surprisingly rich history? Right here before us stands a building that once housed Draughon’s Practical Business College. This wasn’t just any school. It was founded in 1899. It taught students vital skills for the burgeoning business world. Think accounting bookkeeping shorthand. These were the essential tools for success back then.

South University’s story is one of transformation and growth. The South family acquired the college in 1974. They renamed it Draughon’s Junior College. It continued to evolve. In 1986 it became South College. A major milestone arrived in 2001. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation at the master’s level. This led to a name change. South College became South University.

This name change however created an interesting legal challenge. Sewanee The University of the South had already registered their name. A legal dispute followed. It lasted until 2003. Fortunately both universities kept their names. The legal battle added a unique chapter to South University’s story. It shows the university’s ambition and determination to succeed.

Education Management Corporation (EDMC) acquired South University in 2003. The university expanded significantly. It opened eleven campuses across the United States. It also started offering online courses. By 2013 a significant portion of the student body studied online.

The 2010s brought significant challenges. EDMC faced accusations of violating the False Claims Act. The university had to forgive over $100.8 million in student loan debt. This settlement underscores the importance of ethical practices in education. South University faced further difficulties. In 2016 it went on probation due to financial issues with EDMC. It was removed from probation in 2017 after being sold to Dream Center Education Holdings.

Despite the setbacks South University’s Savannah campus celebrated its biggest graduating class in history in 2017. More than 3500 students received degrees. This shows the enduring appeal of this institution. It is a place where students can attain their academic goals.

In 2020 South University received substantial federal funding through the CARES Act. This helped to stabilize the institution. The university however continues to adapt. It navigated a class-action lawsuit regarding robocalls in 2021. It was also part of a large student loan cancellation in 2022 due to alleged fraud.
