Gone. Vanished. That’s what happened to the South Shore Harbor Lighthouse. Right here where we stand a majestic 120-foot-tall landmark once stood. Its metal panels gleaming. A beacon. Not a working lighthouse mind you. More of a decorative centerpiece. But a beloved one.
The South Shore Harbor Lighthouse wasn’t always here. It arrived in 1983. A subsidiary of American National Insurance moved it from another Clear Lake location. They placed it here for their South Shore Harbour residential development. The lighthouse became a symbol of the community. People grew to love it.
Sadly. Time and the elements took their toll. Extensive corrosion weakened the structure. It became unsafe. So. In a decision that wasn’t taken lightly. The lighthouse was dismantled. The metal shell was removed for safety reasons. The remaining core was taken down.
Rebuilding it was considered. Estimates reached a staggering $2 million or more. The cost was prohibitive. Engineering challenges related to windstorm requirements at its original height proved too complex.
The community remembers the South Shore Harbor Lighthouse. It’s part of their history. Some are exploring ways to bring it back. To rebuild this icon. A symbol of South Shore Harbor. A cherished landmark lost but not forgotten. The spot where we stand now. Silent yet full of memories of this once magnificent tower.
