The origins of Shinsekai date back to the 5th Domestic Industrial Exposition. It was held in Tennoji and the present Shinsekai in 1903. Shinsekai was formed with theaters and movie theaters gathering and developing. Currently, both Luna Park and the movie theater are closed.
Shinsekai lies west of Tennoji Zoo, Tennoji Park, and the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art. Instead of trying to blend the park into Shinsekai, its construction resulted in virtually barricading it from the surrounding neighborhood. As an amusement space, it was no match for nearby Universal Studios Japan, which opened in 2001.
The top of Tsutenkaku Tower provides a panoramic view of Osaka. The original Tsutenkaku Tower was completed in 1912. It was designed to resemble both the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.
Shinsekai has several fugu restaurants. The neighborhood’s real culinary forte is kushi-katsu. The neighborhood abounds with kushi-katsu restaurants. They offer meat, fish, and vegetables breaded and deep fried on sticks.
Sumiyoshi Park is the oldest park in Osaka. It opened in 1873. The area is bustling all year round. Sumiyoshi Festival is held at the adjacent Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in the summer.
Osaka Castle Park was constructed on a site with a long history. In the fifteenth century, a militant temple, Ishiyama Hongan-ji, was built here. In 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi destroyed Ishiyama Hongan-ji. He built Osaka Castle here.
