Whispers of the past linger in South Park Street Cemetery. This isn’t just a graveyard. It’s a living testament to Kolkata’s colonial history. Established in 1767 South Park Street Cemetery replaced St John’s Church graveyard. It became one of the earliest non-church cemeteries globally.

Initially a considerable distance from settlements the cemetery lay in marshy fields and jungle. The road leading to it was called Burial Ground Road. Later it became Park Street now Mother Teresa Sarani. This was due to Sir Elijah Impey’s deer park near his house. Even Warren Hastings hunted tigers nearby. Funerals took place after dark. Friends carried coffins lit by torches. Many were British East India Company figures. Their funerals had military pageantry.

The cemetery became overcrowded. The North Park Street Cemetery opened. Both were used simultaneously. South Park Street Cemetery expanded. Rows of tombs replaced haphazard arrangements. A marble plaque reads “South Park Street Opened 1767 Closed 1790”. Burials continued into the 1830s.

The cemetery reflects the short lifespan of Europeans in 18th and 19th century Calcutta. Average life expectancy was 30 for men 25 for women. The immense tombs possibly stemmed from fears of disease spreading in marshy land. Vanity certainly played a role. Constructing such monuments was cheap.

South Park Street Cemetery houses over 1600 graves. Notable figures rest here. Sir William Jones a philologist and scholar is buried here. So is Henry Louis Vivian Derozio a teacher and poet. Major General Charles Stuart known as “Hindoo Stuart” for his embrace of Hinduism is also here. The architecture blends Gothic styles with Greek Egyptian and Indo-Saracenic influences. Intricate carvings sculptures and epitaphs adorn many monuments. Sandstone marble and brick are the primary materials. Tombs range from simple headstones to grand mausoleums.

Despite neglect and damage attempts at restoration continue. The cemetery is a poignant reminder of lives lived and lost in a bygone era. It stands as a silent witness to the complexities of Kolkata’s past a blend of cultures and a testament to the enduring human spirit.
