“Nearly 260 square miles” That’s the area South Oxfordshire covers today. South Oxfordshire is a local government district in Oxfordshire. It offers a blend of rural tranquility and urban convenience.

South Oxfordshire’s story began officially on April 1, 1974. This happened under the Local Government Act of 1972. Six former districts combined to create it. These included Bullingdon Rural District, Henley-on-Thames Municipal Borough, and others. Initially, the new district was to be named Wallingford. However, a request changed it to South Oxfordshire.

The River Thames shapes South Oxfordshire. It flows for about 47 miles through the district. This river once formed the historic county boundary between Berkshire and Oxfordshire. The River Thame also joins within the district.

South Oxfordshire has changed over time. The 2001 Census counted just over 128000 residents. By 2021, this number rose to over 149000. Much of South Oxfordshire remains rural. Agriculture dominates the landscape. Around 70% of the district is green belt or AONB. This includes the northeast part of the Oxford Green Belt.

South Oxfordshire District Council delivers district-level services. Oxfordshire County Council handles county-level services. Civil parishes also exist. They form a third tier of local government. Since 2008, the council shares staff with Vale of White Horse District Council.

Politically, the Liberal Democrats have held a majority since 2023. They administer jointly with the Green Party. This coalition began in 2019. The council headquarters has faced challenges. In 2015, an arson attack destroyed the main offices. The council temporarily moved to Abingdon. The council plans to relocate to Didcot in the future.

South Oxfordshire boasts one of England’s best recycling rates. It topped the league table in 2022/23 for waste recycling. This reflects a long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility.

Visiting South Oxfordshire offers much to see and do. Its towns include Didcot, Henley, Thame, and Wallingford. Didcot is becoming the main urban center. South Oxfordshire is a place of history, nature, and community.

Consider the local villages. Henley-on-Thames offers riverside charm. Wallingford has a medieval town and castle gardens. Didcot Railway Centre showcases steam trains. South Oxfordshire is a unique place. It blends history, nature, and community.
