The construction of the Houston Ship Channel transformed the region’s economy. Manufacturing boomed. South Houston found itself at the heart of this industrial growth.
An unusual tale adds a unique chapter to South Houston’s history. Former mayor George Christy a circus owner used his elephants to help construct the Spencer Highway. In 1980 it grew to 11782 with 303 businesses. The growth continued. By 1990 over 14207 people called South Houston home. Hispanics of Mexican descent played a significant role in this demographic shift. Their arrival between 1980 and 1990 transformed South Houston’s cultural landscape.
Today South Houston is a thriving city. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The Lewis Food Town grocery store chain calls South Houston its home. In 2006 H-E-B opened its unique Mi Tienda store. All the employees spoke Spanish reflecting the community’s rich cultural heritage.
