“Almost 80470 gold bullion bars.” That’s the equivalent of the mineral reserve South Deep Shaft boasts.

Introduction:
We’re here at South Deep Shaft a mining operation near Westonaria. It’s about 50km southwest of Johannesburg. This isn’t just any mine. It’s a world class bulk mechanised mining operation.

Main Narrative:
Since the 1970s South Deep Shaft has been in development. It faced challenges along the way. Today all the key infrastructure is in place. This ensures safe low cost operation. It also ensures bulk mechanised and profitable gold mining. The mine is ramping up production to a steady state. South Deep Shaft has a mineral reserve of 32.19 million ounces. The mine will be a valuable asset for decades. South Deep may be the last gold mine in South Africa. Most other mines will likely run out of reserves by 2101. The current Life-of-Mine is estimated to be 80 years.

Gold mineralisation occurs within quartz pebble conglomerate horizons. These are termed reefs. The reefs are generally less than 2 m in thickness. They represent laterally extensive braided fluvial deposits. All major reef units are developed above stratigraphic unconformity surfaces. The Upper Elsburg formation conglomerates are the target economic horizon. They constitute 100 per cent of the South Deep Mineral reserve ounces.

South Deep employs almost 4600 people directly. These are full time employees or contractors. The mine values its partnership with organised labour. It works closely with them. Each employee plays an important role. They are breadwinners to between 5 and 10 people on average. There are nine host communities nearby. They have a collective population of more than 100000 people. They rely to some degree on the South Deep operation.

The mine recognises this socio-economic context. It takes its social licence to operate very seriously. The safety and well being of employees and communities is a core value. The intensive engagement and consultation with stakeholders is a priority. In addition to the Mining Charter’s Social and Labour Plan South Deep seeks to address community well being. They do this in terms of education skills development and poverty alleviation. They do this through two independently governed trusts. These are the South Deep Community Trust and the South Deep Education Trust.

Conclusion:
South Deep Shaft is more than just a gold mine. It’s a lifeline for thousands of people. It represents the hopes and dreams of communities. It is likely to remain a vital part of South Africa’s economy for generations to come.
