What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of innovation, ambition and academic excellence from the South China University of Technology. Established in 1952 the South China University of Technology has become a pillar of education in Guangzhou. It started as the South China Institute of Technology. This transformation occurred through uniting engineering schools from major universities across five provinces.
South China University of Technology quickly gained recognition. Just eight years later in 1960 it was marked as one of the National Key Universities. This put it under the direct administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. A leap forward came in 1988. The institute was renamed South China University of Technology.
The university’s growth continued into the 21st century. In 1995, it was chosen for significant investment as part of Project 211. By 1999 South China University of Technology was rated “excellent” in undergraduate teaching. That same year, a national science park was established.
South China University of Technology achieved further milestones. The establishment of a Graduate School was authorized in 2000. A year later, it joined the ranks of national universities sponsored by Project 985. By 2017, it earned the distinction of being a Class A Double First-Class University.
South China University of Technology has multiple campuses. They include the Wushan Campus, the University Town Campus and the Guangzhou International Campus.
South China University of Technology is not just a local institution. Its reputation extends far beyond China. In 2013, the Leiden Ranking placed it 138th globally for scientific publications. It was also ranked 5th in China excluding Hong Kong. As of 2023 QS World University Rankings put South China University of Technology at 392 in the world.
Many distinguished individuals have walked these halls. Cheng Siwei served as Vice Chairman of The National People’s Congress. Wan Qingliang was the former mayor and CCP secretary of Guangzhou City. Lin Shusen served as Governor and Deputy Communist Party Chief of Guizhou Province.
The South China University of Technology has also produced leaders in various fields. He Jingtang is the Dean of the School of Architecture of SCUT. He is also a member of the China Academy of Engineering. He was the main designer of the China Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Li Dongsheng is the CEO of TCL Corporation. Zhang Zhidong is the Former CTO of Tencent. Robin Zeng is the Founder and president of CATL.
The motto of South China University of Technology is “Study Extensively, Enquire Accurately; Discriminate Clearly, Practise Earnestly”. This guides students and faculty alike.
