Gazing upon this somber monument, one can’t help but feel the weight of history. The South Boston Vietnam Memorial, nestled within Medal of Honor Park, stands as a poignant tribute to the local men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. This memorial, dedicated in 1981, was among the first of its kind in the nation, predating the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The South Boston Vietnam Memorial poignantly remembers the 25 South Boston residents who perished in the conflict. Their names, etched into the black stone, serve as a permanent reminder of their bravery and the community’s loss. The inscription on the reverse side reads, “If You Forget My Death, Then I Died in Vain,” a powerful testament to the enduring importance of remembrance. The memorial was the brainchild of Thomas Lyons, a South Boston resident, U.S. Marine, and veteran advocate. Lyons, inspired to honor his childhood friends lost in Vietnam in 1968, rallied a committee in 1978 to fund the project. With the support of the community and the City of Boston, they raised $38,000 to bring the memorial to life. Each September, a memorial mass at St. Brigid’s Church precedes a rededication ceremony at the South Boston Vietnam Memorial in Medal of Honor Park. The ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of South Boston’s commitment to service and the enduring legacy of those who answered the call of duty. Families of the fallen, veterans, and community members gather to honor these 25 men, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten. The South Boston Vietnam Memorial is more than just stone and names; it’s a living testament to a community’s love, loss, and unwavering remembrance.
