Encompassing a vast 2.7 million acres, the South Bay County Biological Study Area in San Diego County is a biodiversity hotspot. It stretches from the Mexican border north to Camp Pendleton and from the Pacific coast east to the Sonoran Desert. San Diego County itself is the most biologically diverse county in the continental U.S., facing increasing threats from development. The South Bay County Biological Study Area plays a crucial role in protecting this diversity. The area encompasses various habitats, including coastal sage scrub, Engelmann oak woodlands, native grasslands, conifer forests, and vernal pools. These habitats support a wide range of species. Some are quite common, like burrowing owls. Others are endangered, like the California gnatcatcher, least Bell’s vireo, arroyo southwestern toad, Stephens’ kangaroo rat, San Diego fairy shrimp, Quino checkerspot butterfly, San Diego thornmint, and Dehesa beargrass. The Nature Conservancy has been instrumental in protecting 35,000 acres within this vital area. They work with partners to protect habitats and clean water sources. They have contributed to the expansion of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, a key component of the San Diego Multiple Species Conservation Program. This program aims to balance conservation with development. The South Bay County Biological Study Area faces ongoing challenges due to population growth. Continued conservation efforts are crucial to preserving its unique biodiversity for future generations.
