Can you believe this vibrant hub, South Bank, was once a gritty industrial zone? South Bank, a cultural and lifestyle destination on the southern banks of the Brisbane River, welcomes millions of visitors each year. It’s a dynamic mix of parklands, restaurants, museums, and even a Ferris wheel. But rewind to the 1840s. South Bank was Brisbane’s central business district. Then, the 1893 floods forced the city center to relocate north across the river. South Bank became a bustling port and industrial area. Markets, wharves, dance halls, and theaters thrived here in the 1930s. But progress stalled. South Bank fell into disrepair. Its fortunes changed dramatically in 1984 when it was selected to host World Expo 88. The Expo drew a staggering 18 million people. It showcased South Bank’s potential as a public space. After the Expo, Brisbane residents, enamored with the revitalized area, successfully lobbied to keep it as parkland. South Bank Parklands opened in 1992. Little Stanley Street followed in 1998 and River Quay in 2011. Today, South Bank is one of Brisbane’s most beloved destinations. It even holds the prestigious Green Flag Award, an international mark of excellence for green spaces. South Bank continues to evolve, adding new experiences. It’s a testament to the city’s resilience and vision.
