Souphanouvong University was established by Prime Minister Decree in November 2003. It was officially inaugurated the next day. The university is named after Prince Souphanouvong. He was the first President of the Lao PDR.

Souphanouvong University operates under the Ministry of Education. It fulfills vital roles. These include training specialists and researchers. It also protects Lao’s culture and provides academic services.

Souphanouvong University has two campuses. The main campus is in Ban Donmay. It is 9 km along 13th Northern Road and spans 110 hectares. The Faculty of Education is closer to the city in Ban Nasang-Veuy. It covers 2 hectares.

In 2018, the university helped establish the first Confucius Institute in northern Laos. This was in collaboration with Kunming University of Science and Technology.

Souphanouvong University offers 20 undergraduate bachelor’s degrees. These programs typically last four years.

The Faculty of Education provides degrees in Lao language, English, and mathematics. The Faculty of Economics and Tourism covers economics, business management, and tourism. It also includes IT, international business, and finance.

Agriculture and Forest Resources include plant science, animal science, and food science. The Faculty of Engineering has programs in electrical, computer, and civil engineering. Architecture offers architecture and interior design. The Faculty of Languages teaches Lao and English. It also houses Korean and Chinese language centers.

Souphanouvong University is managed by nine offices. These include administration, finance, academics, and student affairs. They also handle planning, research, and the library.

The university admits students with a Baccalaureate certificate. Classes run Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1600 hours. The academic year starts October 16 and ends July 15. It includes two semesters. The university provides recovery courses in August.

The government allocates the university’s budget. Additional funding comes from tuition fees and international aid. There are about 400 staff members. The university admits around 800 new students yearly.

Souphanouvong University has partnerships with 33 universities and organizations. These are in countries like Vietnam, China, and Thailand. Cooperation focuses on exchanges and library resources.

The university welcomes volunteers with skills to offer. There is a need for English language support. Longer stays are encouraged for volunteers.

Notably, Souphanouvong University participated in the TOOLKIT project. It hosted a cascade training session in December 2021.
