Here we are at the Silver Pagoda. Officially named Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram. It is also known as Wat Preah Keo Morakot. That translates to Temple of the Emerald-Crystal Buddha. Ready to explore its gleaming treasures?

The Silver Pagoda sits proudly on the south side of the Royal Palace. It is in Chey Chumneas Phnom Penh. This temple is not just a feast for the eyes. It is a significant site for royal ceremonies. It is also a repository of Cambodia’s cultural and religious heritage.

King Norodom initiated the construction of the Silver Pagoda between 1892 and 1902. This included the temple building itself. Other structures were added later. These include stupas and the Reamker galleries.

The Silver Pagoda got its nickname from its floor. It is covered with over 5,000 silver tiles. These tiles weigh a combined 1.125 kg. Only a small area is visible to protect them.

Inside the Silver Pagoda, you will find about 1,650 artifacts. These are made of gold, silver, bronze. Many are adorned with precious stones. Diamonds, rubies, and sapphires sparkle.

A life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha stands out. King Sisowath commissioned it. The statue weighs 90 kg. It is decorated with 9,584 diamonds. The largest diamond is 25 carats.

Another treasure is the Emerald Buddha. Some say it is made of Baccarat crystal. Others believe it is made of Baccarat Crystal in the 17th century. However, that is not possible since Baccarat Crystal did not exist until the 18th century. Some sources say it was created in the 19th century by glass designer Lalique.

Notice the walls surrounding the Silver Pagoda. They are covered with murals of the Reamker. Cambodian artists painted these in 1903-1904. Oknha Tep Nimit Mak directed them.

The Silver Pagoda faced challenges. It suffered damage during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. Fortunately, it was later restored.

Remember to dress respectfully when visiting. Shoulders and knees should be covered. This shows respect for this sacred place.

The Silver Pagoda is open every day. Visiting hours are from 7:30 to 11:00. It reopens from 14:00 to 17:00. Note that it may be closed for royal or government events.

Exploring the Silver Pagoda offers insights into Cambodian culture and religion. It expands your knowledge of Southeast Asia. It deepens your appreciation for Buddhism. Take a moment to appreciate the history and artistry around you.
