Was Sor María Romero truly a saint? Let’s explore the captivating story of this remarkable woman right here in Granada, her birthplace. Born in 1902, María Romero Meneses entered this world with a silver spoon, her father a government minister. Her childhood was comfortable. However, at the tender age of twelve, a devastating illness struck her, leaving her paralyzed for six months. It was during this dark period that a miraculous apparition of Our Lady Help of Christians occurred, not only healing her but also igniting a spiritual fire within her. This divine encounter revealed her calling to become a Salesian sister. Sor María Romero’s path was set. She dedicated her life to serving God and the less fortunate.

The young María joined the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, making her final vows in 1929. Two years later, her journey led her to San José, Costa Rica. There, Sor María Romero’s work truly blossomed. While teaching music, drawing, and typing to affluent girls, she also extended her compassionate hand to the poor, training catechists and offering her unwavering support. Sor María Romero possessed a unique gift for connecting with people on a spiritual level, guiding them towards a deeper relationship with God. Her influence was so profound that many of her students felt inspired to join her mission of service.

Sor María Romero recognized the disparity between the rich and the poor. She tirelessly worked to bridge this gap, encouraging the privileged to share their blessings with those in need. Sor María Romero’s vision extended beyond mere charity. She believed in empowering the poor through education and sustainable initiatives. She established recreational centers in 1945, followed by food distribution centers in 1953. In 1961, she founded a school for impoverished girls, and in 1966, she opened a clinic to provide essential healthcare. Sor María Romero’s crowning achievement was the construction of seven homes in 1973. This marked the beginning of Centro San José, a community designed to offer poor families decent housing and a brighter future. She had a profound impact on countless lives, a testament to her unwavering dedication and love for humanity. Though she passed away from a heart attack in 1977, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched, especially here in Granada, where her remarkable story began. Sor María Romero’s legacy is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, one person’s compassion can ignite a revolution of love and change the world.
