Envision a space designed with the very laws of the universe in mind. This is the Sophia-Kirche. Today, we explore a unique landmark of anthroposophical architecture right here in Frankfurt-Bockenheim.

The Sophia-Kirche is more than just a church. It embodies a movement for religious renewal. Architect Nikolaus Ruff designed it for Frankfurt’s Christengemeinschaft. Sadly, this became his last church.

Ruff, who lived from 1934 to 2002, created a space reflecting the principles of “space and counter-space.” Look up. Notice how the ceiling ascends eastward like two pairs of wings. The highest point is above the communion area. Also, observe how the left and right sides are not rigidly symmetrical. Their differences create a higher symmetry.

The Sophia-Kirche was consecrated as a functional shell in Advent 2001. Since then, it has served as a place for worship. The interior received its color scheme and natural stone floor in the summer of 2016.

Originally, Ruff envisioned another structure with a foyer and preparation room. Financial constraints prevented its realization. But, in early 2021, the community decided to complete the church. They developed a plan, true to Ruff’s original design, but smaller in scale.

In June 2024, they submitted the building application. Construction will begin once they obtain the permit and secure funding. The community actively seeks donations to support this final phase.

The Christengemeinschaft relies on voluntary contributions from members and friends. Often, larger projects become possible through inheritances. If you wish to contribute to the Sophia-Kirche’s completion, you can earmark your donation for “Bauabschnitt 3”.

Before we move on, take a moment to appreciate the Sophia-Kirche’s unique architectural expression. It represents a community’s dedication to spiritual and artistic vision. It is a testament to Nikolaus Ruff’s architectural talent. The Sophia-Kirche stands as a beacon of innovative design and spiritual devotion in Frankfurt.
